曾經何時，俄克拉荷馬雷霆的王者杜蘭特有著屬於自己的響亮的外號，一個是“雷神”，一個則是“死神”，這是對於杜蘭特得分能力和天賦的最高的一種褒獎。然而時過境遷，隨著杜蘭特叛逃瞭俄克拉荷馬之後，他在“返鄉”之戰中不但被萬名球迷狂噓，甚至這個城市的球迷還給杜蘭特起瞭一個新的外號——“蛋糕杜”，來諷刺杜蘭特的軟弱和沒有責任感。沒想到的是這個外號似乎一夜之間已經人盡皆知，在輸給掘金的比賽中，杜蘭特竟然收到瞭來自丹佛下榻酒店的特殊禮物——紙杯蛋糕！
這個事情是NBA著名記者克裡斯-海內斯在推特上爆料的，當時在勇士輸給瞭掘金之後，他在推特上寫瞭這個事情：“據我所知，勇士隊在丹佛市中心居住的酒店，那的行政總廚為杜蘭特和他的隊友們烘焙瞭24個杯子蛋糕。行政總廚看見杜蘭特在俄城受到的待遇，所以他向以作為友好的表示，親自為杜蘭特制作甜點。”然而這個事情怎麼看起來，都和“友好”沾不上半點的關系。
在和雷霆的那場比賽之前，整個俄城簡直就是鋪天蓋地的準備瞭各種諷刺杜蘭特的“道具”、T恤和紙牌標語迎接杜蘭特，比如說T恤上寫著“懦夫”的字眼！雖然有極少數的一些人還表達瞭對杜蘭特的感謝，但這個城市特別是在俄克拉荷馬的主場裡，幾乎是沒有人支持杜蘭特的。除瞭他的母親之外，這裡的球迷在杜蘭特每一次接球的時候都會山呼海嘯的噓他，而且全場不止一次萬人狂喊“cake”，而全場球迷穿著紙杯蛋糕的T恤也成為瞭一個奇景。
雖然杜蘭特表示他聽過比這個更難聽的，但實際上這個外號真的被叫響瞭。更有趣的是，在這場比賽之後，勇士的球員包括庫裡和格林在內都穿著這個蛋糕T恤聲援瞭杜蘭特，後來才知道庫裡是用一件勇士熱身服與一名場邊球迷交換瞭一件印有紙杯蛋糕的T恤。然而有的人則認為這種“聲援”容易把這個外號徹底叫響，徹底玩壞。果然，在和掘金的比賽之後，杜蘭特“蛋糕”的名頭不脛而走，竟然連丹佛酒店都開起瞭這樣的玩笑。
如今，杜蘭特再不是聯盟那個被人們熟知的“雷神”和“死神”，也許他依然是聯盟中進攻天賦最高的球星之一甚至是最高，但在離開雷霆之後，聯盟中的雷神就隻剩下瞭一個人，那就是韋少！而杜蘭特的“蛋糕小王子”的名頭不知道什麼時候才會被淡忘，要知道雷霆和勇士一年要打四場比賽，兩次雷霆主場，看來這個梗一時半會是不會完事瞭！
